I’m a nanny- should my employers pay for art/education supplies?

Question by kat k: I’m a nanny- should my employers pay for art/education supplies?
I’m starting a full time job as a nanny in 3 weeks. I am going to finalize the nanny contract tonight and was wondering if it’s appropriate to ask for full reimbursement in the future for things like construction paper, crayons, preschool education books, and any future incidental money when I take the child to the zoo, museum, etc…

I think it is probably the appropriate thing- I’ve never had a full time nanny job before, only part time, so I really want to make this a fun, educational and safe environment…

What do you think?

In my opinion, you should discuss a set amount per week/month for all extra circular activities (including outings and supplies). You might suggest they have a “cash box” set up with that amount that you could pull from it whenever you needed to. But to cover your tail, always replace the cash with receipts. If you happen to go over that amount you will either need to get approval before you spend or run the risk of the expense not being reimbursed and coming out of your own pocket.
